On the first day of Christmas my true love sent to me: A bottle of Ardbeg
This Christmas we’re asking you to help us select the Cask 88 ‘Scottish Distillery of the Year’, as part of our ‘The 12 Drams of Christmas’ campaign. Ardbeg distillery is one of our 12 chosen distilleries, find out more about the campaign and how to vote for your favourites. Click Here
Why do we love Ardbeg?
Ardbeg has a rich history stretching back to 1794, yet the current distillery was built in 1815 and has long been recognised as one of the leading and most peated whiskies to be found on the Isle of Islay. Up until the early 1980s its Pagoda roofed malting floor was in use and, unusually, lacked fans, meaning the trapped peat smoke would thoroughly permeate the malt, creating and extremely pungent whisky. Even today, although no longer not smoking its own malt, the distillery buys in one of the most peated malts in Scotland. In doing so, every expression released has a unique quality, making it instantly recognisable, and the distillery has developed a passionate group of followers. These followers are invited to join a global community via their “Committee”. Check it out on their website
Ardbeg expressions are always popular with our customers and a selection bottles can be found in our shop.
A great example being Ardbeg 1998, Almost There.
This Ardbeg 1998 was titled “Almost There” as it was the last evolution of their young casks that would soon become the 10-Year-Old Renaissance expression. It was bottled by the distillery at cask strength in 2007.
