Spotlight on an Award-Winner – Benromach Distillery is on the Rise

As Cask 88 is the home of rare and old whisky, we really appreciate the distilleries that go above and beyond the norm to create outstanding Scotch whisky. Benromach is very definitely one of those distilleries with an unequivocal passion for creating only the best handcrafted whisky. Their goal, as stated on their website, is to bring back and share “A lost taste of Speyside.” This desire to return to the traditional processes, from selecting the finest local ingredients to the malting on site, and ensuring everything is controlled and managed by hand, is summed up by their enduring motto “Taste Rediscovered” – and you can’t argue with the results.

Over the last few years Benromach have collected award after award for their hard work; only last month they were crowned the winner in the Speyside category for the Benromach 15 Year Old at the *World Whiskies Awards 2018 presentation held at the Waldorf Hilton Hotel in London. Benromach 15 Year Old captures the classic character of Benromach Speyside single malt Scotch whisky – beautifully balanced with a light touch of smoke. This touch of smoke was almost lost forever from the region before the distillery reopened.

This accolade follows the Benromach 10 Year Old recently being honoured Gold in the Speyside 12 Years and Under category at the World Whiskies Awards 2018.

Here at Cask 88 we offer a concierge service that allows customers to seek out particular expressions and releases that will complete their collection. If there is a particular whisky that you are after, contact us today to let us know what you’re looking for.

The Benromach Distillery

Originally built in 1898, Benromach distillery was brought back to life when the Urquhart family realised a lifelong dream to own a distillery and purchased it in 1993. The distillery was extensively re-equipped over a five-year period before it was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in 1998. In reopening Benromach Distillery, the Urquhart family decided to create a classic Speyside single malt – a style that draws its influence from Speyside whiskies pre-1960s. Expressions from this era are increasingly desirable and sought-after by collectors around the globe, although quantities are small and therefore bottles are becoming very rare. Benromach’s reopening was a great example of a silent distillery being brought back to life, an event Cask 88  is always happy to report; as we did reporting on the reopening of three once silent distilleries (Port Ellen, Brora and Rosebank) by 2020.
